Chapter 8 A Ghost in Pursuit

Senior Brother Li Zhi looked embarrassed as he explained to me. There were only this row of four dorm rooms for the mortuary science major.

To give special treatment to us three freshmen junior sisters, everyone had already started the mode of sleeping in a large shared dorm with fifteen people. They had given us Room Ping 004, which was closest to the water room and had the best environment.

"Look, we've flushed it with water several times!"

Senior Brother Li Zhi pushed open the door and made a "please" gesture. I took another look inside and found that the chilling aura had dissipated, and the pale bare feet swaying in the air had disappeared without a trace.

I boldly followed Senior Brother Li Zhi into the room. The room was really clean. Although it had an old - fashioned cement floor, it was spotless. The four double - decker beds with desks below were obviously newly purchased by the school.

"Okay, thank you, senior brother."

I thought I must have been a bit over - sensitive due to the experience in the haunted house that night. If there really was such a thing, it surely wouldn't disappear just because Senior Brother Li Zhi came in!

"It's okay. If you have any problems, just shout. The forty - five strong men in our major are always at your junior sister's disposal!"

Senior Brother Li Zhi joked as he was about to leave.

I started to unpack my luggage. Subconsciously, I chose the innermost bed. I tidied everything up nervously, and since I didn't notice anything abnormal, I finally relaxed. I planned to go to the cafeteria to eat with my newly - issued meal card.

The sun on the horizon had already sunk behind the tall buildings.

The faint crescent moon eagerly floated up into the sky.

I checked my phone. It was almost seven o'clock, and Zhao Zifeng still hadn't sent me a WeChat message. I guessed that there were so many people in her dorm and it was so lively that she had forgotten about meal time.

After thinking for a while, I decided not to interrupt her socializing with her new classmates. I decided to explore the school environment on my own first.

I ate in the cafeteria first. The prices were quite reasonable. I calculated the balance in my Alipay account. It should be enough to last me until the end of this semester at least.

I was looking down at my phone, calculating the money as I walked. Before I knew it, I had arrived at the entrance of a six - story teaching building. Senior Brother Li Zhi had once introduced that this was the experimental building. It would only get lively when the senior students came for internships.

I had intended to go back to the dorm. How did I get lost and end up here!

Suddenly, someone ran from behind and bumped into me hard. I let out a scream, and my phone instantly flew out of my hand.

"Sorry! Sorry!!"

The girl who bumped into me was about my age. She had a sharp oval face with quite delicate makeup on. But because she had run so fast and was so hot, the sweat had smudged her makeup.

She nervously picked up my phone from the ground and wanted to return it to me, but the phone screen had already cracked like a spider's web.

"Ah..." Seeing that she had caused trouble, the oval - faced girl was so scared that she kept apologizing. "Sorry, I, I didn't mean to. There, there's a bad guy chasing me!"

I frowned!

"Should we call the police?" Judging from her panicked look, she didn't seem to be lying. I casually took the phone and looked in the direction she had come from. It was a small overgrown grove, and a dark shadow was approaching us.

"It's too late. He'll kill me!" The oval - faced girl looked completely desperate. Obviously, she had also seen the person chasing her. She hurriedly grabbed me and ran into the building.

My footsteps echoed on the empty stairs. The oval - faced girl's fingers were so cold that it hurt my wrist. A bad premonition suddenly filled my mind.

I started to struggle hard to break free from her grasp.

"Run, run quickly!!" The oval - faced girl turned to look at me in horror. Her tears had washed away her eye makeup, leaving black streaks. She looked scarier than a ghost.

Black mists were surging up the stairs behind us. There were faint creepy sounds coming from inside.

"Wang... Anran... Wang Anran... You can't escape..."

The shrill voice was like an invisible filament that drilled into my ears, stabbing my head painfully. Could it be that the girl in front of me hadn't offended a person at all? Was it a ghost coming to claim her life?

The mist was spreading up rapidly and enveloped both of us.

The oval - faced girl was shivering all over, as if looking for a place to hide.

Finally, she gritted her teeth and hid behind me. I could hear her praying in a low voice: "I hope it can't see me..."

The mist in front of me became thicker. It was almost pitch - black in the stairwell.

I tried hard to press my body against the wall, but since the oval - faced girl was behind me, I could only stand stiffly in the middle of the stairs.

"...Wang... Anran, Wang..." The cold voice was getting closer.

Suddenly, a blank - faced head suddenly emerged from the distorted black mist. It was almost right in front of my face. I almost let out a scream!

It wasn't a normal human face. It didn't even look like the ferocious ghosts I had seen. That face had no facial features, only a pale expanse.

"...Where is it?" That face had no mouth, but the voice penetrated directly into my ears, full of confusion. "Strange. I can clearly sense it... Why can't I find it?!"

I couldn't help but start to shiver. The August weather suddenly made me feel bone - chilling cold.

I don't know how long it had passed. That face trembled a few times and finally retracted into the thick mist. Immediately afterwards, the mist that had covered the entire stairwell suddenly dissipated completely!

"...Is it gone?!"

The oval - faced girl behind me hesitated for a while but still moved out. Seeing that the black mist had disappeared, she immediately grabbed my hand and climbed up the stairs desperately. She climbed all the way to a small classroom on the top floor and locked the door. She was still looking back nervously.

"...You, you can actually block the ghost... uh, the ghost's sight?!"

The oval - faced girl shook my arm excitedly and thanked me repeatedly. "Classmate, thanks to you, I was able to escape the pursuit and killing!!"

"How did you provoke that... that kind of thing?"

I was puzzled. This was a school, a place that should be full of vitality. How could there be a ghost so bold as to come out and claim someone's life before midnight?!

"Sigh..." The oval - faced girl sighed dejectedly. "It's all because of the girls in my dorm. They insisted on playing with the Ouija board. We couldn't send the thing they summoned away, and finally it started to haunt me... Ah, by the way, my name is Wang Anran. I'm a sophomore majoring in urban rail transit. What's your name? Can I be friends with you?"

"Urban rail transit" was the abbreviation for the major "Rail Transit Operation and Management" that Zhao Zifeng was in. This Wang Anran obviously was a very friendly girl. As soon as I asked a question, she chattered on and told me all about her experience.

"I, my name is Lu Xiyu. I'm a freshman majoring in mortuary science." I replied.

"Mortuary science!" Wang Anran sized me up and looked a bit incredulous. "You're so beautiful. Why did you choose this major? I think with your conditions, you'd be fine as a flight attendant."

Wang Anran was different from other classmates. Most of them would immediately keep their distance as soon as they heard that I was majoring in mortuary science.

When I was having dinner in the cafeteria, I had already scared away several senior boys who came to strike up a conversation with me because of my major.
