Extra Story 9: Amnesia

Shangguan Yun looked at the fair little hand holding his wrist, his face turning displeased as he gradually frowned.

Seeing Shangguan Yun's eyes turn as cold as on New Year's Eve, Wu Luoluo suddenly realized that perhaps this noble young master simply disliked strangers getting too close, which was why he was so guarded and resistant towards her. Wu Luoluo quickly let go of Shangguan Yun's wrist and took several steps back. Sure enough, she saw Shangguan Yun's expression soften slightly.

Wu Luoluo retreated to the corner and said softly, "This is the Wu's Pharmacy on Cangmang Mountain. My name is Wu Luoluo, and I'm an apprentice pharmacist here. More than half a month ago, you were fished out from the ice layer of Tianhu Lake by my grand-uncle and brought here. He instructed me to take good care of you, so you've been staying here. Please rest assured, young master. I was just feeling your pulse. I didn't mean to be rude."

Cangmang Mountain? Pharmacy? Wu Luoluo? Grand-uncle? Ice layer of Tianhu Lake? Feeling the pulse?

Shangguan Yun was completely confused. He understood every single word, but when they were combined and came out of Wu Luoluo's mouth, he couldn't make any sense of them. Shangguan Yun frowned so tightly that he could have pinched a fly. With a pair of hazy eyes filled with confusion, he stared at Wu Luoluo without saying a word.

Wu Luoluo bowed and said, "Oh, I haven't thanked you yet for saving me on New Year's Eve. I'm extremely grateful for your kindness, young master. I'll do my best to take care of you until your cold illness is cured. Please rest assured and stay here!"

What happened on New Year's Eve? Shangguan Yun's eyes grew even more confused. According to this woman, he had once saved her? But why couldn't he remember anything?

Seeing that Shangguan Yun didn't say a word, Wu Luoluo wasn't sure what he was thinking. She hesitated and asked, "May I ask your name, young master? Where are you from? Where is your home? And why did you fall to the bottom of the ice layer in Tianhu Lake?"

Shangguan Yun's mind was blank. He seemed to have been to the bottom of the ice layer. Vaguely, he felt that a woman had jumped into the water to look for him. The woman was slender, weak, and lively. She swam back and forth in the cold water, frantically searching for him. Shangguan Yun felt a twinge of bitterness in his heart. He didn't know who the woman was, but he knew that she was extremely important to him. Then, he seemed to hear a man shouting his name hoarsely. Immediately afterwards, the man also jumped into the water to look for him. The man felt very familiar to him, as if he had been by his side for many years. But who was he? What was his name?

Why couldn't he remember anything all of a sudden?

Shangguan Yun's face showed pain. He clasped his head tightly with both hands. It felt as if there was an iron drill drilling into his head, causing sharp pains. Big drops of sweat rolled down his forehead and fell into the brown medicinal soup.

Wu Luoluo saw him clutching his head tightly and gasping for breath. The veins on his slender fingers bulged, and his fingernails dug into his head, as if this was the only way to relieve the pain. Wu Luoluo didn't dare to ask any more questions. She quickly took out the needle case from her clothes and stepped forward, saying, "If you can't remember, young master, then don't force yourself! I know a little about medicine. Where do you feel uncomfortable? Let me take a look!"

"It hurts—" Shangguan Yun hugged his head, his face contorted in pain. He reached out his hand to feel for the silver needle at the Baihui acupoint on his head.

"Don't, young master!" Wu Luoluo was quick-eyed and quick-handed. She took out a silver needle and stabbed it into the back of Shangguan Yun's head. He rolled his eyes and slumped over, unconscious. Wu Luoluo gently supported Shangguan Yun's head, smoothed out his messy black hair that had been grabbed by him, and carefully wiped the sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief.

Wu Luoluo sighed silently in her heart. Judging from the young master's condition, it seemed that his memory was damaged. If he couldn't remember anything at all, it wouldn't matter. He could just stay in the mountains with her and learn pharmacology. However, after observing him for some time, Wu Luoluo vaguely felt that this young master's family background must be either wealthy or noble. If he completely forgot everything, that would be fine. But what if he had a chance to regain his memory and go home? His family would surely be able to provide him with better treatment and care.

Staying in the mountains might delay his recovery, right? After all, life in the mountains was hard, not even a fraction as comfortable as that in a wealthy family.

Forget it. Everything was up to fate. She'd just wait and see what her grand-uncle would instruct.

After about two hours of soaking in the medicinal bath, Wu Luoluo lifted Shangguan Yun out, dried him off, dressed him, carried him on her back to the wood shed, laid him in the quilt, and carefully wiped the sweat from his body.

His side profile was so handsome! His eyebrows and eyes were as if painted, and his long eyelashes fluttered gently. Wu Luoluo couldn't help but reach out her hand and gently touch them. It felt soft and delicate, like being gently brushed by a butterfly's wings.

Shangguan Yun's eyelashes fluttered even more violently.

Wu Luoluo washed the handkerchief and the replaced mattress, hung them in the side room to dry, and then quietly went to the attic to fetch a few tattered medical books to read. She read intently for an entire afternoon. It was only when it started to get dark that she realized it was already so late.

Outside the mountain gate, in the distance, the direction of Jiangcheng was lit up with lights. It was the night of the Lantern Festival. She wondered if her master's wife had gone out to watch the lanterns. It must be extremely lively there! Wu Luoluo stood at the door, looking into the distance with envy in her heart. Then she slowly closed the courtyard gate.

As night fell, Shangguan Yun on the couch shed the heat from the medicinal bath during the day. He felt the cold seeping into his body at night, and he was extremely cold all over. Before long, he felt someone light a brazier beside him, and he finally felt a little warmer.

"Prince Yun!"

In his dream, the woman was calling him. She was nimbly shuttling through the treetops towards him. Her purple dress fluttered in the wind, as clean, clear, and beautiful as a forest elf. Shangguan Yun felt a warmth in his heart. He stretched out his arms to hug her, but unexpectedly, he missed. In the blink of an eye, she disappeared. Shangguan Yun panicked and searched for her figure everywhere. But suddenly, the surrounding area turned into the bottom of a deep blue ice lake. The ice-cold water was bone-chilling, and the feeling of suffocation rushed towards him. Shangguan Yun was cold and scared. He felt that he was almost frozen stiff and gradually lost consciousness.

I don't know how much time had passed. A small, warm hand reached into the quilt and grabbed his wrist to feel his pulse. The hand was as warm as the sun. Just by simply resting on his wrist, he felt a wave of heat passing through her fingertips, making Shangguan Yun feel comfortable and at ease.

Wu Luoluo saw that his pulse was normal. She quietly put his hand back into the quilt and tucked in the corner of the quilt. Then she rustled out of her clothes and crawled into the quilt at the foot of the bed.

Sensing that this woman had climbed into the quilt without any sense of propriety, Shangguan Yun was stunned. He suddenly opened his eyes in the darkness. He was just about to kick her out when Wu Luoluo deftly picked up his cold feet and tightly hugged them into her arms. Then she snuggled up against his body and fell into a deep sleep. After reading medical books for so long today without realizing it, Wu Luoluo was really exhausted.
